Hello Goodbye: chic is being free and easy

The new single from Rio de Janeiro native Leo Middea celebrates his desire to come and go around the world spreading his solar energy through the swing of his music: Brazilian, authentic and modern

Who has never dreamed of a better life (or just another life) in a distant country? For many Brazilians, Europe, in particular, presents itself as the promised land. From London to Lisbon, from Berlin to Paris, passing through Amsterdam, Barcelona and, of course, Rome, because all roads apparently lead there, the 'old continent' seems to be the right destination for those who seek that something extra, that glamour.

This feeling of being in Europe, living a dream: that’s what Hello Goodbye, new single from the singer and composer Leo Middea, is about, following his last EP, Beleza Isolar. Like the album, the new track was also conceived during the isolation caused by the pandemic. Feeling in his skin the cold European winter, the artist, born in Rio de Janeiro, was taken by the concept, or rather, the Lusophone feeling, beautiful and unique, represented by the word saudade, perfect fuel for the artist to compose the single.

Thinking of his homeland and, even more, of his peers, fellow Brazilians, that Leo, from his apartment in Lisbon, starts a dialogue with those who are on the other side of the Atlantic. "Hey you, how is Brazil? I am here with homesickness, feeling cold, but everything is fine, I am cool, I am happy, I am in Europe, it is really chic to say that you are in Europe.

With a soul, light and humorous vibe, but without losing track of the story, Hello Goodbye plays with the idea that living in Europe is the answer to everything, the happy ending so dreamed of. But is it really that? Maybe for some people it is, but not for Leo Middea. Even though he is happy where he is, he wants more, and Hello Goodbye clearly carries this message. Hungry for the world, the artist defends, through his art, the desire to come and go, without settling down anywhere, hence the explicit duality present in the title Hello Goodbye. "Here you have everything good, but I want to go to Japan, with strength in the solar plexus, Imagine playing in the States, dancing in Times Square, a festival in Istanbul and not understanding anything in Moscow", he declares through the single that brings, as well as other of his works a strong autobiographical connection.

First in his family and even among his closest group of friends, particularly his neighbors in Jacarepaguá, to leave Brazil for Europe, Leo Middea believes that his trajectory can be an inspiration for others who, like him, did not have or have a privileged condition. "I see this music as a way to encourage people to go out into the world, regardless of their financial constraints, not to make them a limitation to project themselves far away," he says.

Taking his own words as a mantra, the artist is not intimidated by barriers on the way, on the contrary, he makes his travels a source of discovery and especially an opportunity to expand the boundaries of modern MPB. Hello Goodbye represents this desire, with its highly danceable swing and bringing all the tropical coloring that is one of the most striking characteristics of the artist's work, reiterating his origins, his ancestry, his north.

Constantly dialoguing, sometimes in a more subtle way, sometimes not so much, with figures that inspired him since the beginning of his trajectory as a musician, Leo Middea has the ability to refer and, pleasantly, connect us with artists such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Jorge Benjor, Tim Maia, and a wide list. Particularly in Hello Goodbye, one can think of a connection with "Meu caro amigo". The result of a partnership between Chico Buarque and Francis Hime, the lyrics, written in 1976, during the terrible years of military dictatorship in Brazil, carried a message, in the form of music, to Augusto Boal, a Brazilian theatrologist exiled in Lisbon, narrating, lyrically, the dramatic situation in the country.

More than 40 years later, it is curious to see how Hello Goodbye retakes the idea of contact between Brazilians separated by the ocean, but this time with the message going in the opposite direction, directly from Lisbon to Brazil. Decided to live in exile by choice, in a moment when the political situation in his country is anything but favorable, Leo Middea projects, through his music, a Brazilianness that is much bigger than any government and that is expressed through the vibration, the free but powerful movement, of the melody that perfectly accompanies the lyrics, the musical production and arrangements by Peter Mesquita.

lyrics

Ei você
Como anda o Brasil?
Eu tô aqui com saudade
E passando frio
Mas tudo bem
Eu to legal, eu to feliz

Eu to na Europa!
E é chique demais
Dizer que tá na Europa!
Aqui tem tudo de bom
Mas quero ir até o Japão
Com força no plexo solar

Imagina nos States tocar
Dançar na Time Square.
Um festival em Istambul
E não entender nada em Moscou

Ai ai ai ai
Só dizendo
Hello Goodbye
